What is CollOvine made from?

CollOvine is made from ovine (sheep) skin, sole-sourced from Australia. Through a unique manufacturing process, naturally occurring lanolin from sheep is mainly retained within the collagen structure.

Australia is recognized as a TSE-free country.

What does the lanolin do?

Lanolin is a natural wax derived from sheep’s sebaceous glands. It is widely used in skincare for its moisturizing properties, helps form a protective barrier that keeps moisture in and prevents water loss, works as an emollient, and has been reported as anti-inflammatory.

What are the collagen types?

The collagen is approximately 90% Type I and 10% Type III, very close to human skin composition.

How is this different from Fibracol?

Fibracol is made from bovine (cow) skin and is also approximately 90% Type I and 10% Type III collagen.

How is this different from EndoForm?

EndoForm is made from the forestomach of sheep. CollOvine and Fibracol are made from the outer skin, using ovine pelts and bovine hides respectively.

What makes CollOvine a better alternative to Fibracol or EndoForm?

CollOvine is 100% made in the USA. Its three-dimensional collagen scaffold formed during lyophilisation is similar to both EndoForm and Fibracol, with the additional benefits lanolin can provide.

Is the crystalline or marbling appearance different from Fibracol?

No. Fibracol is also a lyophilised dressing, and exudate absorption is expected to be very similar.

Does CollOvine need to be prewetted before use?

No. CollOvine is soft, conformable, and readily absorbs at least 15 times its own weight of exudate. Prewetting with sterile saline is recommended only for very dry wounds with low exudate.

Is a secondary dressing required?

Yes. CollOvine should be secured in place with a suitable non-occlusive secondary dressing.

Is that different from Fibracol or EndoForm?

No. A secondary dressing is likewise required.

What is the crystalline or marbling appearance, and does it affect performance?

CollOvine is a lyophilised, or freeze-dried, product. Random ice crystal structures form during freezing, and when the ice is removed under vacuum the resulting voids are surrounded by collagen. This does not affect performance because wound exudate quickly absorbs into those voids.

Is CollOvine haemostatic?

Most collagens have a haemostatic effect, and CollOvine is no different. Its three-dimensional structure provides binding sites that help the coagulation cascade become established, with platelets adhering to the collagen structure.
